The Bait-Free Way To Set A Mouse Trap
By Andrew Smith
It is possible to catch a mouse or mice in the traditional "Break-Back" traps without the need for using any bait. These traps were originally designed with a spring-loaded metal arm fixed to a wooden base. You can still buy these traps, a common brand is the "Nipper", but there are also more modern equivalents made from metal and plastic. I prefer the original wooden ones because their pressure plate is perfect for trapping without bait. Here's how you do it; You need to set the traps where you have seen the mouse or mice moving at speed. This is typically along the base of a wall out in the open. So for example, if the mice are entering a room by squeezing under a door, they will probably be making a beeline for the back of the sofa/fridge/cabinet, etc. Set your trap close to the destination, i.e. sofa/fridge/cabinet, etc, but not right at it (leave 6 - 12 inches space before the cover). Mice are short-sighted, so they will "hug" the skirting board or wall whilst running. If you set the trap perpendicular to the wall, so that the trapping arm travels towards the wall when sprung. The idea is that the short-sighted mouse is running fast for the safety of cover and will run over the pressure plate, springing the trap. I worked in the Pest Control industry for over 15 years and this was a commonly used successful strategy. |
