Overcoming Back Pain Using CPM and "Backlife".
As much as 75% of the population suffer from bouts of lower back pain in their lifetime. Back pain can result from simply over-stretching, lifting a heavy weight, a sudden twist, poor posture or a combination of any of these. Usually, the pain will ease off after several days but for some people can also persist for several weeks. For years, medical advice was to rest until the pain had eased, however, it is now accepted that this advice was wrong and that keeping active will help you to recover more quickly. One therapeutic method of exercise practiced by osteopaths and chiropractors is called Continuous Passive Movement (CPM). This involves the patient lying on their back with their legs raised and bent at the knee. The osteopath or chiropractor places their hands under the patient’s knees and gently rotates the patient’s pelvis. This relaxes the back muscles and eases tension. Although CPM is proven to ease lower back pain and aid recovery, frequent trips to the clinic to receive this treatment can be inconvenient for many, especially if your are working, and costly for those who don’t receive free medical care. An Israeli gentleman, named Ori Elan, has developed a portable device that can administer CPM in the comfort of your own home. The device is called “Backlife” and was developed with the input of leading back experts in Israel. At £227 + £8 p+p (in the UK), Backlife is not cheap, however, it does come with a lifetime guarantee and has been featured in the UK media. It is also considerably cheaper than other pain-relieving products, such as mattresses (£500+) or the “Mobiliser” (£2495). Continuous Passive Movement, as the name implies, is not a quick fix remedy to lower back pain. The makers of Backlife recommend using their device twice daily (morning and night) for 12 minutes at a time. Users should expect to start feeling the benefits after about 2 weeks; however, this can vary depending on the severity of the injury. They also advise that use continues after the pain has cleared as the gentle exercising nature of the device can help to prevent pain reoccurring. The causes of lower back pain are difficult for the medical profession to diagnose and so it would appear that we will continue to suffer its debilitating effects for the foreseeable future. Continuous Passive Movement is a proven method that is now within the reach of the masses that can help us to recover from and stave off the recurrence of this troublesome condition.
